You're boating on Lake Keowee when a DNR boat approaches. You exchange hellos and agree that it's a great boating day. Then you are asked to produce the following papers and safety equipment:
May I see your:
- Boat registration card (nice to have your photo ID to verify your ownership)
- Registration numbers and valid decal on your hull and Motor Decal on your 5 hp or larger motor
- Coast Guard-approved life vests which are the right size/fit for each occupant
- Children under the age of 12 are required to wear a PFD on a Class
A boat (less than 16ft. in length and it must be fastened and of
the proper size for the child. If in a 16 ft. or larger they
are not.
- Type IV Throw Cushion at hand
- Sound Device, either whisle, horn, or bell
- Fire extinguisher if fuel tank in enclosed space or cannot be quickly removed
Also know that:
- A passenger riding your bow or changing a head sail while boat is motor- propelled can catch you a violation: Reason - people have fallen overboard and had the prop ride over them.
- If boating after official sunset, your nav-lights need to be fully working. (Consider keeping spare bulbs and fuses)
