FOLKS' 319 Grant is well underway improving Cane Creek's water quality. The project goal is to reduce the number of bacteria from human and animal sources to meet state standards. The grant consists of three parts:
- Measuring many parts of Cane & Little Cane
Creek to locate source of problem
- Contract with property owners of identified sources, with matching funds, to correct the problem.
- Mark all street drains to increase public awareness that these drains flow into Cane Creek and ultimately into Lake Keowee
To date the following has been accomplished:
- Monitoring has located most of the hot spots
- Monitoring a stretch of the Walhalla Sewerage System has identified a major source of impairment and Walhalla Utilities is working to remediate as we continue to monitor the problem area
- 15 home sewage systems are in various stages of rebuilding.
- Walhalla Troup 45 has located & are in the process of marking all drains that flow into the creeks
